How to Stop Hair Breakage

Preventing hair breakage is important if you want to achieve luscious locks. We don’t want anything to break, especially not our hair! As your crowning glory, breakage can cause a lot of stress, but there are ways to avoid this. We are focused on helping you achieve the hair of your dreams. From understanding what causes hair to break in the first place, to exactly how you can work on repairing and preventing further damage, we’ve got the information you need to put a stop to hair breakage now!

What is Hair Breakage?

Hair breakage is exactly what it sounds like, when your hair strands break or snap. This can happen anywhere along the hair strand, from near the root right down to the tips of the hair. This tends to happen when hair bonds become damaged and lose strength. It also acts as a sign that your hair may be damaged, whether that be from chemicals, dryness, or any other factor.

What Does Hair Breakage Look Like?

There are many different signs of hair damage and hair breakage, including split ends (this is when individual hair strands split into lots of little hairs off the main strand), white dots on the hair strand, hair looking dull, and flyaway hair. You may also notice that hair that has shedded around your house may be shorter than the general length of your locks.

What Causes Hair Breakage?

To know how to stop hair breakage, you first need to understand what causes it in the first place. A number of things can cause hair to break, and this includes but is not exclusive to:

  • Hair being too dry
  • Heat damage from styling tools (including hair dryers, straightening irons, and tongs)
  • Overuse of chemicals including bleaching, dying, and relaxers
  • Not having frequent trims
  • Using a brush or comb that’s not suitable for your hair type
  • Damage from accessories such as hair ties and clips

These factors not only work to damage the bonds in your hair, but can cause a moisture protein imbalance too. Luckily there are ways to repair some of the damage, as well as ways you can prevent further damage happening in the future. From being more gentle with how you treat your hair, to switching out damaging products for ones ideal for your hair type.

How to Treat Hair Breakage

Whilst you cannot fix hair that is already broken, you can use products to prevent it from happening again in the future. Our range of hair strengthening products work to create strong and healthy hair that’s protected from damage. Ensuring your hair bonds are as strong as possible is essential to fighting breakage, and our Bond Curl Rehab Salve is a treatment that targets and repairs these. You can use it before your shampoo, leaving it on for 15 to 20 minutes, allowing its active ingredients to work on strengthening your hair’s bonds.

Making sure hair is well nourished and moisturised can also prevent breakage from happening, using conditioning products like co-wash, and leave-in conditioners can help you tackle dry locks.

How to Prevent Hair Breakage

Now we know what causes our hair to break, we can focus on what we can do to prevent this from happening. Firstly, we can limit the use of heat on our hair. You could do this by letting hair air dry instead of using a blow-dryer, or embracing your natural texture more by avoiding straighteners.

Finding a comb or brush that works for your hair type is also a brilliant way to prevent hair breakage. When it comes to curly hair, we recommend detangling in the shower, during your conditioning process, to enhance slip and reduce the chance of breakage. It’s also essential to moisturise your locks properly to avoid dryness, learning how to deep condition hair, is a brilliant way to do this.

When it comes to chemical damage, we recommend consulting with your hair stylist about how to minimise this as much as possible during any processes you’re having done. It’s also important to see your stylist regularly for trims to keep hair healthy and breakage to a minimum.
